Established as a small fishing village in the 12th century, both origins and etymology refer to a dam in the river Amstel. Amsterdam defined itself as a vital trading outpost during the Dutch Golden age, expanding throughout the 19th and 20th centuries towards its modern form.

Today, the city presents itself as a mixture of old and new, combining its role as a commercial center with its historic past. Every year, more than 3.6 million international visitors travel to see landmark sites such as Amsterdam's historic canals and cultural attractions such as the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House and the Hermitage Amsterdam .
